Introduction

Sustainability is fundamental to Ail Arian’s purpose and is embedded within the development of our company, products and services.

Printed electronics offer significant opportunities across a wide range of sectors, including packaging, healthcare, wearable technology and consumer electronics. However, many of these applications rely on valuable materials such as silver, which can be difficult to recover once incorporated into a printed product. As a result, these materials are often lost at the end of the product’s useful life.

Ail Arian was established to address this challenge by developing conductive materials with circularity considered from the outset.

Designed for circularity

Our patented conductive silver inks are designed to be magnetically recoverable, allowing the silver, alongside additional components such as LEDs, to be separated from printed products at the end of their life.

The recovered silver can then be processed and used to manufacture new conductive ink, creating a more circular material pathway and reducing reliance on newly sourced silver.

By considering end-of-life recovery at the design stage, we aim to make more effective use of valuable resources while maintaining the performance required for printed electronic technologies.

A responsible approach to smart packaging

As Ail Arian continues to develop smart and interactive packaging solutions, sustainability remains an important consideration throughout the design and development process.

Technologies such as illumination, monitoring and authentication can enhance packaging functionality, consumer engagement and product value. However, introducing these features can also make packaging more complex to recycle if end-of-life considerations are not addressed from the outset.

Our approach is to develop smart packaging that combines functionality and visual impact with greater consideration for material recovery and recyclability.

This enables us to help brands explore new ways of enhancing their packaging while supporting wider sustainability and circular economy objectives.

Supporting changing packaging requirements

Packaging regulations are evolving, with increasing emphasis being placed on recyclability, waste reduction and greater responsibility for the materials used in packaging.

Changes such as Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging in the UK and the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation are encouraging businesses to consider the full lifecycle of their packaging, including what happens to materials after use.

For brands looking to introduce smart and interactive features, this makes end-of-life design increasingly important. Adding electronic functionality can introduce additional materials and components that may contaminate existing recycling streams, meaning some traditional approaches to incorporating electronics into packaging are becoming increasingly difficult to justify.

Our technology has been developed with this challenge in mind. By making the conductive circuit magnetically recoverable, valuable materials and electronic components can be separated from the bulk packaging waste using magnetic separation technologies already commonly used within recycling processes.

This enables brands to explore innovative and interactive packaging solutions while supporting the transition towards more recyclable and circular packaging systems.
